Total Produce Plc recognises the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals as the international blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. We share their ambition to address the global challenges we collectively face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice. We undertake to work with our fellow stakeholders across the fresh produce supply chain to pursue these goals and to build our group’s Corporate Social Responsibility policies and practices around the framework and principles upon which they are based. See: https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/

Figure 1: United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

In Total Produce, we have targeted 4 goals; one as our pillar goal and three as priority goals across 2019 and 2020 (See Figure 1 above).

Goal 3 speaks to the very core of what we do in Total Produce; promoting “Good Health and Well-Being.” As such, it is our permanent, “Pillar” UN SDG. Clause 3.4 targets a one third reduction in Non-Communicable Diseases; Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes or Chronic Respiratory Disease by 2030. The contribution fresh produce consumption makes in reducing the risk of non-communicable disease is widely recognised and every day, across all of our global operations, we work tirelessly to promote the integration of fresh fruits and vegetables into a balanced diet and inspire consumers to make the healthy choices which can contribute to the fight against NCD’s.

In addition to our Pillar Goal, we have undertaken to concentrate additional resources in pursuit of Goal 12, Responsible Consumption and Production, Goal 13, Climate Action and Goal 14, Life Below Water. To this end, we are pursuing two group-wide projects:

Vision 20/20; is a root & branch review of our collective energy consumption with a view to measuring and reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions. Our objective is to a). Adopt sustainable practices & b). Integrate sustainability information and climate change measures into policies, strategies & planning. Click here for more – https://www.totalproduce.com/vision-20-20/

Eircycle; is an initiative dedicated to substantially reducing the use of conventional plastic across our operations. Its objective is to a). Enhance the conservation & sustainable use of oceans by preventing plastics from contaminating our seas and b). Contribute to development of a Circular Plastics Economy, promoting the sustainable management of plastics across Europe and the world. See www.eircycle.ie

In selecting these specific four goals, we in Total Produce as a group are seeking to focus resources on specific areas of our business where we have identified immediate opportunities to implement tangible changes that will yield tangible, measurable dividends. This focus is not to the detriment of or exclusion of other worthwhile goals. Every day, in each of our operations around the world, we strive to be a responsible corporate citizen, promoting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals in their totality and engraining the principles which underpin them in to our protocols, procedures and practices.
